The old underground culture is why the stereotype exists, it was all the LGBTQI+ stuff in one, these days though its much easier to just be G if thats all you are.Leah Reich was one of the first internet advice columnists. I would say that gay men are a wide range of personality these days because they are dont have to fit the old stereotype any more, it is that stereotype that was homophobic, one that was pushed on the majority by the media, and the compressed gay culture that encompassed all non cis-straight types. What about very camp straight men (who do exist, they are quite common actually), are they faking it to seem gay?Ĭlaiming that a gay man being butch is internal homophobia actually seems homophobic to me, because it implies homosexuality is a fixed reference point, a narrow range. Just because a gay man is indistinguishable from a straight one, it doesn't mean they are faking it or just trying to fit in, it means thats what they are like. Man stuff is whatever men do, its a wide range of things. Part of it is rather obvious-of course people change themselves to meet the demands of the dating market-but it's intriguing to think that this could produce a situation where gay men value masculinity more than straight men. (Though some research is now showing that beards are more popular among gay than straight men, so perhaps the lightly stubbled straight man has become more successful than the bearded one.)Īnyway, I'm curious what you think of this idea.
In one sense, this argument doesn't really work, because women do NOT prefer sexually dimorphic faces-in fact, straight women prefer feminine faces (except during ovulation) by my logic, we would expect straight men to intentionally groom themselves in a feminine way, which we don't really find.
The idea is not that gay masculinity is fake or that the gay bro is just a flamer with internalized homophobia (an argument I hate), but simply that if the presentation of self is strongly tied to romantic (or at least sexual) success, gay men will trend in the direction that is desired. Given this fact, is it possible that gay men are attempting to present themselves as (physically) masculine as a means of meeting the "demands of the market," regardless of their own place in the masculine–feminine spectrum? Several studies have shown that men prefer sexually "dimorphic" faces, such that straight men prefer highly feminine faces and gay men prefer highly masculine faces.
